9-year-old boy dies from lightning while playing soccer
As reported by the BBC, the result appears to have been truly tragic when a nine-year-old boy died after being struck by lightning while on soccer practice.
A child was injured in a playground on Common Edge Road in Blackpool shortly after 5:00 pm BST when a thunderstorm struck Lancashire.
Lancashire police said he was taken to hospital but did not survive.
FC Spirit of Youth Junior, which uses the pitch, said the boy will take part in a private training session.
Police said that although the investigation is still ongoing, the boy was believed to have been struck by lightning.
Det Supt Nick Connaughton said: “This is a truly devastating incident and we truly think of the family and friends of the little boy who passed away at this very sad and troubling time.”
In a statement posted on the club’s Facebook page, Spirit of Youth said: “We deeply regret to report the news that the boy who was struck by lightning tonight is sadly dead.
“As a club, we are heartbroken and offer our deepest condolences to the boy’s family.
“The spirit of youth is family, and we are rooted in the local community, and we will provide all the necessary support to both the family and those who were with it at the time.
Rest in Peace Young Man.
Club secretary Daniel Park said there are three teams to train tonight, but classes were canceled due to the storm.
Police said the boy’s family was informed and supported by the officers.
