Bandits now install traditional religious leaders, collect taxes and fines - Shehu Sani

More recently, gunmen slaughtered over 15 people in the Goronyo and Illela local government areas of Sokoto state.

A former federal deputy, Shehu Sani shouted at the activities of the bandits.

He said terrorist groups in the Northeast now operate openly without fear. Sani complained via a tweet on Twitter.

The lawmaker, who represented the Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the Eighth National Assembly, said the bandits went beyond kidnapping, raiding and extorting ransoms to perform state functions.

The bandits, as they are called, have gone on a rampage and people living in some rural areas of the region say not a day goes by without terrorists kidnapping and killing people.

And in a tweet on Wednesday, Shehu Sani sounded the alarm that “the bandits have boldly gone beyond launching raids, kidnappings and ransom extortions; now they perform state functions such as collecting taxes, imposing fines, and installing religious and traditional rulers in rural areas.

“The constituted authority is losing its constitutional authority”.
