Benue and Akwa Ibom become states with the most people living with HIV in Nigeria – NACA

Two states have the largest number of HIV-infected people in the country.

According to the National AIDS Control Agency (NACA), Akwa Ibom and Benue have the highest numbers of HIV infections in Nigeria.

According to the report, 48 out of 1,000 randomly selected people in the states are at risk of testing positive for HIV, much higher than the national average of 13 per 1,000, bringing Nigeria’s HIV prevalence rate to 1.3 percent. according to the 2018 Nigeria HIV / AIDS and Impact Survey (NAIIS).

According to NACA CEO Dr Gambo Aliyu, the spread of HIV has mainly been related to behavior and then culture.

“If you look at some of the communities across the country, because of culture and behavior, you will see that prevalence is very high because of the way people live, interact and socialize.”

Other states such as Taraba, Anambra and Abia have the next highest HIV prevalence rates, 2.6 percent, 2.2 percent and 2.0 percent, respectively. The report shows that the northern states have the lowest HIV prevalence rates.
