Bode George: PDP must conduct a new convention if North chooses the ticket for 2023

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will have to conduct another national convention if the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general election emerges from the North, said chief Olabode George, the party’s former national vice president.

Last month the party zoned its national presidency position in the northern part of the country at its national convention in Eagles Square, Abuja. At the end of the exercise, Iyorchia Ayu, former president of the Senate, was elected as the new national president.

Although not yet formally announced, the party, led by its governors, has agreed to open the presidential ticket to allow all aspiring aspirants in the north and south of the country to participate in the presidential primaries.

It was also noted that, as part of the deal reached prior to his rise as national president, Ayu agreed to step down from his position if the presidential candidate emerges from the north, as the presidential candidate and national president cannot be from the same area. .

The initial belief was that if Ayu resigns, the national vice president (South) will take over the position of helmsman of the party.

Many believe it was why the position was hotly contested between Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun state and Taofeek Arapaja, former deputy governor of Oyo state, who ultimately won the election.

However, speaking exclusively to the Daily Independent, George, who opposed the opening of the presidential ticket, said the South should produce the party’s flagship as the North already has the national president.

He said the party will have to conduct another convention to reorganize all positions if a northerner wins the presidential ticket.

He said: “Once the presidential candidate emerges from the North, we will have to go back to another convention to reorganize all those positions. The positions that were in the South before the Convention are now all in the North and all the positions in the North are now in the South. The presidency and the presidency cannot come from the same area. We will have to make another convention where all those positions that are already in the North will go down to the South and vice versa “.

When reminded that Ayu has already signed a pledge to step down if the presidential candidate emerges from the North, George said, “If he resigns, then let’s go to the convention and elect a new president. Ayu is a thoroughbred member of the group. Knows the culture, rules and procedures of the party. It is well cared for and has a robust character. He will be sincere and honest. This is why he said that if the presidential candidate comes from the North, he will have to resign.

“We don’t manually select national presidents. They are elected at the congress. So if the presidential candidate emerges from the north, the vice president will come from the south, the president of the Senate will come from the north, the president will come from the south, the SGF will come from the north, and the national president will come from the south. These are serious positions and must be contested and elected through a national conference “.

On the belief of some that the national vice president (South) automatically assumes the post of national president if Ayu resigns, George said that only a convention can produce a national president as anyone who takes over without being properly elected in a convention will not be recognized and all his actions will be deemed illegal.

“For those who say Ayu’s second-in-command takes over if he resigns, it’s a load of junk. You cannot emerge because it will legally influence us. You must be elected by a convention, not through wuru wuru or fraudulent means. It can never happen. Anyone who is appointed or elected without a national convention is a 419. He has no status. If he signs a letter and sends it to INEC, they will refuse and say that they do not recognize him and that it is dangerous.

“So if anyone thinks along that line, they don’t understand how the party works. We will go back to the national convention and these people will emerge through that process. Otherwise asking another person to take over without being elected is completely illegal ”.

Also speaking of the claims that the governors have assumed full control of the party, George admitted that there was a leadership vacuum in the party as there was not yet a presidential candidate and the governors had to intervene to stabilize the party.

“It is true. Governors seem to have a role to play and I plead that they themselves must be just, just and fair. Whoever comes to equity must come with clean hands. There cannot be a vacuum in the leadership. Leadership should usually be whoever won the presidential ticket and until another comes out, he remains the party leader. There was a vacuum, the presidential candidate was not available, and the governors took over management.

“Yes, there is the PDP Governors’ Forum, but as it is going we have to be fair, honest and be honest with ourselves. This is the only thing that can save our party now ”.

Contacted, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s advertising secretary, said there were many issues on the table regarding the issue of zoning the presidential ticket but added that “no concrete decision has yet been made.”

In addition, Diran Odeyemi, the Deputy National Secretary for Advertising, said the PDP will look into the legal implications of the circumstances and do what is in accordance with the Federal Republic’s constitution.

“The party will examine the legal implications of the circumstances, ensure that everything we do is in accordance with Nigeria’s constitution and electoral laws. Above all, we will know how to cross the bridge when we get there ”.
