Bukhari restores suspended VC UNILAG, Ogundipe

The dismissed deputy rector of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has been reinstated, reports The PUNCH.

This was stated in a statement by the director of public relations and press of the Ministry of Education Ben-Bem Gung on Wednesday.

The statement was titled “Re: Report of the UNILAG Special Visiting Group”.

It reads in part: “President Muhammadu Bukhari, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Visitor to the University of Lagos, has approved the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Visiting the University of Lagos.

“The main conclusions and recommendations approved by the President are as follows: the removal of Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe from the post of Deputy Chancellor was not in accordance with due process.

“The Vice-Chancellor was not given the opportunity to defend himself against the charges on which his dismissal was based. Therefore, it should be restored.

“All allegations brought against the Vice-Chancellor and the university leadership before and after the establishment of the Ad Hoc Visiting Committee should be referred to the regular visiting team for a thorough investigation and the necessary recommendations.

“The process adopted by the Council in appointing Professor Omololu Soyombo as interim vice rector of the university is incompatible with the provisions of the law regarding the appointment of an interim vice rector.

“The governing board should be dissolved.

“Mr. President, after carefully studying the report, approved all the recommendations of the expert group.

As a result, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe was reinstated as Vice-Rector of the University of Lagos.

“The Governing Council of the University of Lagos, chaired by Dr. B.O. Babalakin was dismissed. The President hopes these steps will bring peace, stability, focus and direction to the university. “
