COVID-19: Governor Yahaya Bello Reveals Why Kogi State Dropped $ 1.1B World Bank Support Fund
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello revealed why he ditched a $ 1.1 billion World Bank support fund to fight the state’s coronavirus.
The Manager described the World Bank’s Memorandum of Understanding on the fund as a “unilateral agreement”.
However, he acknowledged that the state government received $ 1 billion from the federal government to address the impact of COVID-19 in his state.
He said that in the meantime he answered questions about Channel Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.
The World Bank has approved $ 114.28 million to help Nigeria improve its COVID-19 response capacity.
The fund is expected to be distributed among 36 states and FCT as grants to support efforts to contain the spread of the virus in the country.
The COVID-19 pandemic has political overtones, Bello said.
He said: “I turned down funding from the World Bank because I don’t believe in COVID-19. The five cases reported in Kogi state are also the creation of the NCDC.
“Go check the magazines. Kogi state is the only state that refused to sign this document for N1.1bilion because they don’t believe in COVID. $ 500 million was paid, the Kogi State did not receive, and I refused to receive it, and I refused.
“I refused to sign because it is a unilateral agreement.”
On why he received the COVID-19 fund from the federal government and rejected it from the World Bank, Bello said: “Even though we did not have COVID-19 in Kogi state, we are equally affected; because our economy has suffered equally and the federal government has allocated this fund to help each state, and we cannot refuse it. “
Earlier, Bello expressed concern about receiving COVID-19 materials from COCAVID and other organizations by state governments.
He said it was “ridiculous” that “they are driving three trucks and still want to do a preliminary and follow-up check.”
The governor said his government was distributing palliatives to residents prior to COVID-19.
“I said when COVID-19 entered this country that some people would take advantage of it, and this is what happened. And I say again that some people set a specific timetable for 2023. Now from #EndSARS to thugs stealing CACOVID, to various young people or people speaking IPOBs and statements. Various groups are making statements, ”he added.
