The Nigerian military canceled the remaining events at the 2020 Army Chief of Staff’s annual conference, which took place following the death of one of the attendees in Abuja on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Major General John Irefin, 6th Division Commander, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, reportedly died from complications from COVID-19.
A senior military officer confirmed to PUNCH Irefin’s death on Thursday, calling it gruesome.
The Army’s interim director of public affairs, Brigadier General Sagir Musa, said in a statement on Thursday that all conference attendees were ordered to immediately begin self-isolation in accordance with the protocol for COVID-19. …
The annual conference, which began on Monday, was attended by the President, Major General Muhammadu Bukhari (ret.) And several dignitaries as virtual participants, as well as Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratay; Defense Minister Bashir Magashi and several others were physically present.
Those who were physically present at the event, including senior officers, representatives of the PRC government, senior military personnel and guests, were forced to self-isolate.
The statement said, “All participants were ordered to immediately begin self-isolation in accordance with the federal government’s COVID-19 protocol and to prevent further spread of the disease.”
CAS also announced that this son’s marriage, Khamisu, scheduled for Friday (today), will be shortened without the participation of those attending the conference.
“However, due to the resumption of the pandemic in the FCT, General Buraay will not be able to personally attend, receive or meet you at the event. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, ”the statement reads.
Army spokesman Brigadier General Sagir Musa was unable to confirm Irefin’s disappearance as his phone rang.
He had yet to respond to a WhatsApp message at the time of the presentation of this report.
