There was palpable tension in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, when a commercial driver bit and swallowed part of the finger of Iboko Kenneth, a member of the state ministry’s development task force in the capital in an attempt to escape arrest.

The action left Kenneth in pain and his colleagues in total confusion, but before they could recover from the shock, the driver had fled the scene, his finger dismembered in his stomach.

The incident took place in Onuebonyi Junction, in the metropolis of Abakaliki, when the state ministry of development of the capital and its task force were inspecting the state capital to make sure there were no illegal parks within the capital.

The government had previously ordered all commercial transportation companies to move to a new park known as Akubaraoha Central Park, intended for them in the state capital.

The New Telegraph reports that once they arrived at the Onuebonyi interchange, some drivers were seen carrying passengers, which angered the ministry and the task force.

It was at this point that Kenneth attempted to arrest one of the rebel drivers.

But the driver grabbed his finger and bit it. The driver reportedly swallowed his finger and fled as his vehicle was hijacked by the task force.

The victim was taken to the emergency room of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) for treatment.

Reacting, the capital’s development commissioner, chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi, described the incident as “terrible, unexpected and barbaric”.
