A respected former Nigerian leader, a statue of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was attached to Anambra.
PUNCH reports that a statue of the late Azikiwe, a pioneer of Nigeria’s President, was burned by gunmen who infiltrated #EndSARS protesters in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The statue was located at the Denis Memorial Gymnasium roundabout, Avka Avenue, Onitsha, known as the Zeke roundabout.
During the destruction of the effigy, protesters shouted, “You dragged us into this mess by defending Nigeria,” “You are the cause of our problems,” among other unflattering remarks.
Talking about what happened, a relative of Azikive Victor Ononye called him heresy and sacrilege.
He said: “Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe, the first President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, must express regret wherever he is for leading Nigeria to independence.
“What happened at the DMGS roundabout, Onitsha, which I saw with my own eyes, caused tears.
“Disbelievers, thugs, wire cutters, moccasins, charlatans, idiots, bastards and bastards besieged the statue, hung used rubber around its neck, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire.
“They decapitated his hand and left with the title stick. This was the height of the ingratitude of bastards who ignore history.
“They fell on various items used to decorate the site and tore them apart. There weren’t many of them. Why the police, two steps away from the roundabout, could not intervene remained a mystery.
“I saw two vigilantes brandishing rifles and riding a motorcycle. They stopped, the boys greeted and left. “
