El Rufai insists it’s time to restructure Nigeria, he says we have no excuses
Speaking at a public conference marking the 50th anniversary of Arewa House held in Kaduna on Saturday, the governor said that restructuring the country is in the best interests of achieving sustainable development.
El Rufai, who cited the 2018 APC restructuring committee recommendations, noted that the country’s constitutional framework needs to be reorganized to give states more control over certain resources.
Created in 2017 under the chairmanship of El Rufai, the goal of the APC was to determine the party’s position on restructuring in accordance with the assurance that all Nigerians would benefit from true federalism.
El-Rufai explained that as part of the proposed restructuring, states will have more control over the police, oil and gas resources, minerals, correctional facilities, brands, registration of trade names and more.
“I am not aware of any significant group of supporters who would oppose the idea that states should exercise appropriate powers, assume greater responsibility and control resources to enable them to do better for those they govern. This will allow state governments to stop handing the dollar over to the president and the federal government when most of the problems our citizens face on a daily basis as a nation can be addressed through improved state-centered governance, ”he said. …
“The time has come to carry out such a clearly defined restructuring for the benefit of the peoples of this country.
“In the report of our PCA Committee for True Federalism, recommendations and amendments to legislation are collected in one place to achieve a restructuring of policy. Therefore, I urge our federal legislators and the National Assembly’s ad hoc constitutional review committee to take advantage of our report and, without further delay, initiate constitutional and legislative amendments in a simple or comprehensive manner.
“Therefore, we have no excuse that we did not take advantage of this moment and did the hard work for our country and our people. It is in our hands to create structures, laws and constitutional mechanisms in our country that promote modern governance that will ensure the prosperity of our country in the 21st century. ”
