EndSARS: Bank Accounts Rinu, Pamilerin, Gatefield Blocked By CBN

The central bank of Nigeria last month received a federal court order to freeze 20 bank accounts associated with supporters of the #EndSARS campaign last month, according to a court document obtained by the Peoples Gazette.

On 20 October, Governor Godwin Emefiele filed an ex parte request for an account freeze, which was promptly granted by Judge Ahmed Mohammed of the Abuja Federal High Court branch.

According to documents, former Attorney General Michael Aondoakaa supported the account freeze case on behalf of CBN.

Among the blocked bank accounts were those operated by public interest think tank Gatefield and pharmacist Bassey Israel. Gatefield has already filed a lawsuit to appeal the blocking of his account.

The banks that were ordered to freeze the bank accounts of the #EndSARS champions included Access Bank, Fidelity, First Bank, GTB, Zenith, and UBA.

There were complaints from Nigerians that their bank accounts were frozen in connection with their participation in the #EndSARS campaign, with CBN cited as the main culprit in the punishment.
CBN has repeatedly denied involvement in the bank freeze of #EndSARS protesters.
