EndSARS: Lagos Establishes € 200 Million Compensation Fund for Victims of Police Brutality
The Lagos state government announced on Tuesday that it has set up a $ 200 million fund to compensate the families of the victims of the Special Robbery Squad (SARS) murders. This was stated by the Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanvo-Olu, addressing the EndSARS demonstrators at the doors of the Assembly of Lagos, Alausa, Ikeja.
The Compensation Fund will be fully controlled by civil society organizations (CSOs) appointed by members of the public.
Sanwo-Olu called on defenders to submit a list of everyone who had SARS deaths in Lagos. He said the government would identify the families and provide them with compensation. The governor said he fully supports the fight against EndSARS, knowing that many young people have been beaten and are in pain.
He said that in fulfillment of one of the demands of the protesters, all the detainees were released without any conditions. Sanwo Olu also promised to convey to President Muhammad Bukhari the demands of the protesters, some of which relate to higher police salaries, as well as justice for people killed by the police. Let us remind you that on Monday the governor addressed some of the demonstrators at the toll collection point in Lekki, where he expressed solidarity with them.
