The US government said yesterday it would close its embassy in Lagos state for two days due to ongoing nationwide protests in the country.

He also warned his citizens in Nigeria to be wary of protests in the country by being vigilant and avoiding areas affected by ongoing protests.

Although the U.S. Mission to Nigeria, in a statement posted to its Twitter account, @USinNigeria did not shed any light on its stance on the protest, but said it would close the U.S. consulate in Lagos for two days starting Tuesday.

The statement said: “Many demonstrations are taking place throughout Nigeria, including areas in the consular districts of Abuja and Lagos.

“While most of the demonstrations are peaceful, some have escalated into violence and have closed major roads and bridges.

“Some police stations were attacked. Lagos state has closed all schools indefinitely since October 19 due to protests and imposed a 24-hour curfew from 4:00 pm on October 20. Consulate General in Lagos is closed today and tomorrow.

“We continue to urge all US citizens to avoid areas around protests and rallies and to check local media for updates and traffic warnings. Remain vigilant and avoid areas affected by protests. “
