Fatal accident kills six people on Sagamu-Benin highway
As a result of the tragic incident on Tuesday morning in the Ajede Ogbere district of Ijebu-Ode-Ore on the Sagamu-Benin highway, six people were killed and others were seriously injured.
The commander of the Federal Highway Traffic Safety Service sector in Ogun, Ahmed Umar, confirmed the crash, saying that three vehicles were involved in the crash.
The sector commander said the incident involved a Mazda bus labeled JJJ 862 XV, a Toyota Sienna with registration number KRD 306 BJ, and a Mercedes Benz (luxury bus) labeled AGL 05 XZ.
According to Umar, the accident happened at 12.01 and was caused by unfair overtaking, speeding and loss of control of the luxury bus driver.
He added that a total of 39 people were involved in the incident, including 25 adult men and 14 adult women. Six people were reported dead (five men and one woman).
He said: “The alleged causes of the numerous accidents were illegal overtaking and speeding by the luxury bus driver, resulting in loss of control.
“A luxury bus crashed into an oncoming car in Siena and a Mazda bus.
“The driver immediately ran away because all the passengers in the Sienna were killed and the passengers on the Mazda bus were injured.”
Umar explained that the deceased were taken to the morgue of the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital.
He added that four people were injured and were taken to the same hospital for treatment.
The head of the FRSC called the accident an act that could be avoided and advised motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous driving, and follow traffic rules.
The sector commander expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and ordered them to contact the FRSC command in Ogber for detailed information on the disaster and return the victims’ property found from the scene of the accident.
