FG establishes committee to fight hunger in Nigeria
The administration of President Muhammadu Bukhari has created a team to fight hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria.
Laolu Akande announced the opening of a dedicated technical advisory group to support the implementation of the five-year National Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Action Plan (NMPAN) in a presidential statement Thursday.
He said that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo formed the group earlier this week when he called a virtual meeting of the National Food and Nutrition Committee.
Group members represent the Vice President’s Office, Nigeria Governors Forum, Nigerian Nutrition Society, Nutrition Partners Forum, Organized Private Sector, Academy / Research, Scale Nutrition Secretariat at the Federal Ministry of Health, Civil Society Groups, and NU-Nutrition.
Osinbajo said the body “will provide high-level strategic advice and support to the National Nutrition Council Secretariat on a vision and strategy for a national food and nutrition policy that will promote nutritional positioning and comparative advantage to maximize impact.”
The committee is mandated to provide technical assistance to the NCN and the Secretariat; facilitating interagency and intra-agency coordination, oversight, monitoring and implementation of NMPAN.
Osinbajo noted that this task will be accomplished “by developing an overarching workplan for the National Multisectoral Action Plan on Nutrition; define and document the roles of each sector and MDA, and the relationship between these roles and the achievement of NMPAN-based nutritional outcomes. “
The group will work with the newly formed National Food and Nutrition Committee to identify and educate the secretariat on the capacity needs for the development and implementation of nutrition programs and projects as defined by NMPAN.
He will also develop a comprehensive security, information and training strategy for NMPAN.
“More than ever, we need to think holistically if we are to tackle the problem of malnutrition. I believe we have entered a new era where collaboration and active stakeholder participation is integral to the implementation of NMPAN. on our agenda and they should push us forward, ”said Osinabjo.
