FG to suspend rail links if COVID-19 protocols are not followed
The federal government says so will stop the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna rail links if Covid-19 is found among passengers.
Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi said Monday during the NTA Good Morning Nigeria program monitored by PUNCH.
He said train users must comply with all Covid-19 protocols from the start of each journey to the end.
The minister said: “If we see us transporting Covid passengers from Lagos to Ibadan and from Ibadan to Lagos, we will stop it the same way they threaten us to stop passengers from Kaduna to Abuja if people do not follow Covid protocols.
“Don’t forget that in Kaduna Abuja we carry 4,000 passengers in one day. Imagine about 20% have Covid, they can broadcast Covid to all passengers. The transmission speed will be high. It’s the same with Lagos. Everyone must follow Covid protocols, wear masks until the end of the journey. “
The minister also added that the $ 1.6 billion Lagos-Ibadan railway project, which will be completed this month, will actually be inaugurated by President Major General Muhammadu Bukhari (retired).
The Nigerian Railway Corporation began operations in December 2020 on the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, a 156 km standard gauge railway.
