In a statement entitled “A Call for Peace,” Jonathan said that no nation can defeat its people. He also said that the use of deadly force against citizens only exacerbated the tense situation.

The former president said;

“My heart belongs to the families of young Nigerians who have been killed in recent days by the #EndSARS protests. May God give them strength in this difficult time.

It was a difficult time for me too. “Nation-building is a collective task requiring genuine efforts from all patriotic citizens; old or young. Our country cannot afford to lose the lives of our young people as we strive to take the lead and continue our country’s path to greatness.

“As a leader, we must understand that a nation can never win a battle against its own people. Thus, the use of lethal force against citizens only exacerbates tensions, not mitigates them. Therefore, we must move from the battlefields to the middle level in our personal and national life. I believe this is the essence of democracy.
