Fulani shepherds attack Soyinka’s house in Abeokuta

On Wednesday, suspected Fulani shepherds attacked the house of Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka in Abeokuta, Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria.

Shepherds reportedly arrived at Soyinka’s home in Ijegba Forest, Abeokuta early in the morning, but police intervention saved the day.

It turned out that the police were quickly called in and arrived at Soyinka’s home to prevent attacks on him.

Soyinka reportedly moved to Lagos after the attack on his home.

When contacted, the public relations officer, PPRO, Ogun Abimbola Oyemi Police Department said he could not speak about the matter as he and the others were on their way to Soyinka’s house.

He said he would talk later, visiting this place to see everything with his own eyes.

However, an unconfirmed source said some of the pastors were arrested in connection with the attack.

The attack came just days after Soyinka told President Muhammad Bukhari to act urgently to stop the pastoral crisis before it escalated into civil war.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Soyinka said the shepherd crisis has already turned into a war “at our doorstep.”

He said that this should trigger some kind of mobilization and stressed the urgent need for a solution.

“If we continue to wait for the decision to be made centrally, we will all, if not already, become slaves in our land,” he said.

According to him, the situation is simply unbearable and unacceptable.

He said he instructed Governor Dapo Abiodun to understand what was going on.

“We are here not only to live, but also to live with dignity. At this moment, our dignity is erased, ”he said.

Soyinka, who lives in Abeokuta in the forest, said her space was violated by shepherds.

“My forest has been conquered. It shrinks, shrinks. My usual hunting shifts have shrunk, shrunk. “

He said that his family warned him not to go further into the forest to hunt.

Soinka said that Bukhari’s silence against the background of the atrocities committed by the shepherds means that he was involved in their crimes.
