Niger Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has called on the National Assembly and the federal government to expedite the recruitment of additional security personnel.
Governor Sani Bello called when he was hosting the Niger State faction in the attending National Assembly to express condolences to the government over the growing incidents of banditry in the state.
The governor expressed concern about insecurity in the state in particular and in the country in general, despite concerted efforts to prevent it, noting that security forces are overwhelmed, inadequate and lacking sufficient surveillance equipment to cope well with security forces. “We are working hard to reduce it, but it was extremely difficult, mainly due to the lack of manpower and equipment. The total police force in Niger is about 4,000, compared with 14,000 in Niger alone. So you see the police are overwhelmed and I believe the army is the same.
“I hope we can work together to support the federal government so that they can do whatever is necessary to expedite the recruitment of more security personnel. At the same time, many technologies are now required to implement and manage security very well. Therefore, I hope the National Assembly will support the federal government when it comes to the state budget that will provide this equipment, ”he said.
He described the visit as a sign of unity between the state government and members of the State National Assembly, adding that the protected victims are doing well and are ready to be reunited with their families.
Governor Sani Bello has expressed optimism that the victims abducted by Kagara State College of Science will soon be released as there is tireless efforts to do so.
Earlier, members of the State National Assembly, led by Deputy Head of the Senate Senator Abdullahi Sabi, representing North Niger, expressed concern about security issues in the state, especially in recent days, calling them shocking and touching, therefore asking for prayer and divine intervention.
