How police abandoned Governor Oetola during the Osuna assassination attempt

Nigerian police officers deserted Governor Osun Gboyega Oyetola and were unable to cover him when he was attacked by a crowd on Saturday.

The governor was addressing #EndSARS protesters in Osogbo, the state capital, when stones and objects were thrown at him, and he was immediately escorted to his car.

When the governor’s column left the protest camp, some young people with dangerous weapons got into the cars, but Oyetola and members of his cabinet managed to escape.

Prior to the incident, the governor walked with demonstrators from the Alekuvodo area in the state capital to Olaya Junction, also in Osogbo, and sang songs of solidarity with them.

He spoke to the crowd when things got out of hand.

Governor’s office sources said the state’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) had assured Oyetola of adequate safety before meeting with the protesters.

According to sources, this was based on police assurances of the governor’s move.

“Before leaving for the protest site, Police Commissioner Osuna, through his spokesman, urged the governor to go and speak with the protesters, promising to provide him with cover. I can confirm this, ”said one of the sources.

“But it’s surprising that the police didn’t send enough officers for a protest of this magnitude. When the crisis hit, we saw no police coverage. The governor is practically in danger. “

Another source said the police gave Oetole two options to protest.

“A DCP spokesman who met with the governor said he could meet with the protesters outside the government building or address them during the protest,” the source said.

“He assured him that adequate security measures have been taken and that everything is under control. But when the crisis hit, even DCP was not unavailable. “

But Yemisi Opalola, a state police officer for public relations (PPRO), objected to reports that the police did not cover Oyetol.

“It is not true. How was the governor saved if the police didn’t cover him? How did he get out of this place? Who evacuated him? Isn’t that the police? ” He told TheCable over the phone.

When asked to comment on Opalola’s statement, one source said: “Please ask the PPRO, which is clearly trying to defend its work, if anyone has been arrested for attempting to assassinate the governor. No one has been arrested yet.

“He’s not telling the truth. Videos of the incident were posted on social media. Please check to see if the governor has cops. He was rescued by the security assistants. The police left the governor when it was most important. “

When TheCable contacted Ismail Omipidan, the governor’s chief spokesman, he simply said, “There were security holes, but now we have passed that stage. My director was unharmed and no one was killed on the protest field. We are grateful to God for this. “

On a statewide broadcast the day after the attack, the governor blamed the incident as “political thugs,” saying the young people who voted for him could not turn against him.

“What happened on Saturday is questionable, unacceptable and a scourge to the Omoluabi spirit of Osun State. The Osun youths who are the first #EndSARS protesters … this assassination attempt could not have come from them. Protesters participated in a peaceful demonstration for the first two days before it was captured in the last five days, ”he said.

Oyetola, who said the government is in control, added that those responsible for this cowardly act would be held accountable.
