IGP Announces SWAT Will Replace Decommissioned SARS

Mohammed Adamu, Inspector General of Police (IGP) has announced the formation of a new unit in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

A new force unit called the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) replaces the decommissioned Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which was disbanded on Sunday.

This was stated in a statement by police spokesman Frank Mba on Tuesday, in which officers from the abolished police unit were asked to report to the force headquarters for verification.

Officers are expected to go through this process as a prelude to further training and reorientation before being transferred to key policing roles.

The medical clearance will be carried out by the new Police Advisory and Support Unit (PCAU), a unit that will henceforth be responsible for the psychological management, reorientation and training of Force officers deployed for tactical and other operations. Duties.

“The unit, located in the Force’s medical ward and coordinated by a Force medical officer, is composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, pastors and imams, public relations specialists, civil society and other human rights groups. with relevant qualifications and experience.

“Meanwhile, PGI has formed a new Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that will fill in the gaps created by the collapse of the late SARS. Potential members of this new team will also undergo psychological and medical examinations to ensure they are fit and appropriate for the new position.

“Next week they will have to start training at various tactical police training institutions across the country. While officers from the Southeast and South-South Police Commands will be trained at the Counter Terrorism College, Nonwa Tai, Rivers State, the North and Southwest Police Commands will receive police training, respectively. Mobile Force Training College, Ende, Nasarawa State, and Mobile Force Police Training College, Ila-Orangun, Osun State, ”the statement said.
