IGP deals with police officers using force against peaceful demonstrators
All police officers in Nigeria have been alerted to the grave consequences of the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
Police Inspector General (PGI) Mohammed Adamu issued a warning. It was among video clips on social media of police shooting live at peaceful protesters.
This is stated in a statement by DCP police spokesman Frank Mba. Adamu said that citizens “have a fundamental right to freedom of expression, assembly and movement, and this must always be supported and protected by the police.”
However, the chief of police urged the demonstrators “to behave constantly and not allow criminal elements to enter their ranks.”
“The leadership of the Force has clearly heard the voice of the people and is unconditionally committed to doing whatever it takes to eliminate the evil observed, punish the guilty officers and elevate the people-friendly police to the throne,” Adamu said.
