The bandits massacred the village head and killed eight others in Tungar Ruwa, in the local government area of Anka, in the state of Zamfara.
The incident occurred Wednesday at midnight. PREMIUM TIMES found that the attack lasted several hours.
Police spokesman in the state, Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the attack but gave no details.
Anka is one of the areas of the local government of Zamfara under incessant attacks by bandits. Rural people displaced by the attacks flooded the headquarters of the local government area and Maru, as well as the local government areas of Talata Mafara.
A source, Anas Mustapha, told this newspaper that the bandits invaded the village on motorcycles and started shooting in the air as they made their way to the village chief’s residence.
Then they took him out and slaughtered him in the presence of some of his own who had also been rounded up by the bandits.
“Eight other people were confirmed dead when the bandits left after the attack. But our understanding is that they (bandits) came for the village chief. You know when they hear that a particular leader in a community is giving them trouble, they kill him instantly, ”Mustapha said.
He said the bandits also stole food and pets in the village but did not kidnap anyone
This happens just days after gunmen ambushed a road and killed seven mobile police officers on patrol duty in the state.
