Islamist suspects release 900 prisoners from eastern Congo prison

Militants freed about 900 prisoners from a prison in Beni in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in a coordinated attack early Tuesday morning, the city’s mayor said, blaming an Islamist militant group operating in the area.

According to Modest Bakwanamaha, only 100 of the more than 1,000 inmates remained after the simultaneous attack on Kangbai Central Prison and the military camp that defended it.

“Unfortunately, the attackers, who arrived in large numbers, managed to break down the door with electrical equipment,” Bakwanamaha told Reuters by phone. “We believe ADF did it.”

According to the UN, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group in Uganda that has been operating in eastern Congo since the 1990s, has killed more than 1,000 civilians since early 2019, despite repeated military campaigns to destroy it.

None of the groups immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
