Media experts and scholars have argued that the amendment to the sixth edition of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code is a threat to press freedom and an obstacle to national integration; so it should be reversed.
They spoke at the public presentation of a publication entitled “Question Marks on Amendments to the 6th NBC Code”, organized by the International Press Center (IPC).
“Journalists are the fourth state of the kingdom, not the fourth state of the wreck. Where will a media organization that has been fined N50 million get its money? The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is not a regulatory body but a commercial company, ”said a former head of the Department of Mass Communications, University of Lagos, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye.
IPC executive director and publisher of the publication, Lanre Arogundade, said NBC would strangle rather than regulate broadcast media with the amendment.
Co-editor of the publication, Dr Tunde Akanni, associate professor of journalism and director of Lagos State University’s Digital Media Research Center, said the publication was a wake-up call for media professionals and other citizens. eager to have good governance in Nigeria.
