NEPAD Seeks Legislative Support to End Poverty

On Wednesday, Princess Gloria Akobundu, National Coordinator / Executive Director of AUD-NEPAD / APRM, called on the National Assembly to support addressing poverty in the country.

Princess Akobundu took office during the 2021 budget defense held at the request of the Senate and House of Representatives Africa Integration and Cooperation Committees, co-chaired by Senator Chimaroke Nnamani and Representative Mohammed Bago.

In her presentation, Princess Akobundu explained that the team was in the National Assembly to discuss the budget and how to work together to move our dear country forward.

“My appeal to this esteemed house is that you instructed me to watch over us and observe how we accomplish what little or nothing we have had in the past. But with your commitment to ensuring that NEPAD is successful and promotes this country, we want to ask you to study our budget and help us because it is very tight.

“As well as the supervision of the Honorable. Users saw this and were surprised that we can use AC. So, looking at what we need to do, namely poverty eradication, as well as the challenges of the current generation, in which we have many crowded young people, especially in rural areas, who complain about many of the problems and problems associated with COVID- 19 that I believe in NEPAD and do a lot to encourage people, especially women in rural communities known for eradicating poverty.

“First, remember that there is something like Keke Napep for poverty alleviation, so some of these poverty reduction programs need to be housed in NEPAD so we can start and come back to provide you with relevant updates. what have we done.

“Secondly, we have a copy of our bill that needs to be considered in order to ensure a solid balance that allows us to fulfill our functions, because if we are not properly structured around the ongoing reform, we will not be able to engage with the community. international and development partners so that we can mobilize resources to support everything we get from the federal government to do our job.

“Therefore, we need proper policies and the approval of our bill so that we can be strong to fulfill or fulfill our mandate,” said Princess Akobundu.

He also called for an increase in the annual budgetary allocation to effectively fulfill the Agency’s mandate, pointing out that the current budget is very tight and we cannot handle it. Therefore, we ask you to understand this and support us so that we do our job better, “

In his speech, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Integration and Cooperation in Africa noted that the committee had seen results during the recent oversight role of NEPAD.

“We went to the supervision and during the supervision saw their work. I think we have informed you about this, and I think that, based on the prevailing situation, it would be very wise if they did their part for 2021, ”he urged.

MP Bago, who noted that the mixed committees had revised the budget before the team arrived, explained that everyone has a draft budget that we are working on.

“But if there are things that you think the Committee can do to help you or improve something, let us know. Because, at your discretion, people are still here to watch the process. “
