Nigerian Air Force Denies Ignoring Chibok Distress Call

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) denied these allegations, saying they refused to respond to requests for support when Boko Haram rebels invaded and attacked the Shikarkir area, Chibok Local Government (LGA) District of Borno State.

According to Ibikunle Daramola, director of public relations and information for the Nigerian Air Force, they have never received any requests to support the attack on Takulashi village.

Daramola said that if such a report were received, the NAF, with its characteristic reactivity, would certainly take appropriate action.

The statement says:

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) was drawn to a posting on an online platform claiming they did not respond to requests for support when suspected Boko Haram rebels attacked Takulashi village in Shikarkir District, Chibok Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State , Sunday morning, November 1, 2020 “.

“The information the report allegedly obtained from alleged ‘military sources’. The US National Forces wants to declare that there is absolutely nothing true about the false accusations. In fact, we would not normally respond to such baseless and unfounded allegations if they were not for the need to clarify the situation and reaffirm the NAF’s strong commitment to ensuring the safety of Nigeria and Nigerians, wherever they live in the country.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it should be pointed out that the NAF did not receive any requests to support the attack on Takulashi village in the Chibok LGA on November 1, 2020. Should such a message be received, the NAF, with its characteristic reactivity, will definitely take appropriate action.

In fact, the report rightly noted that “if the air support had arrived on time, one or two airstrikes would have destroyed them.” However, at that time, no requests were made to the operational air force of Operation LAFIA. DOLE (ATF OPLD) that day. Consequently, it was very wrong in the report to state, without any reason, that the NAF “ignored the distress signals.”

“It is pertinent to note that the NAF, through ATF OPLD, has flown more than 26,000 hours of reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and air and close air support missions in support of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in the past. For 5 years, NAF has worked hand in hand with other security forces and has a group of well trained and highly motivated young pilots who are always ready and available to respond to emergencies when needed.

“Therefore, it is absolutely ridiculous to assume that the NAF will not respond to such a situation if asked. Therefore, the general public is encouraged to refuse knowingly false reporting.

“It is equally wrong for the online media to refer to an isolated incident, which had its own specific shades of collateral damage predisposition, as the basis for justifying their blatantly false claims. It smacks of gross unprofessionalism and obvious intention to harm.

“The NAF, as a professional and disciplined force, has done and will continue to do its utmost to ensure the security of Nigeria and Nigerians throughout the country. We remain steadfast in our role and will continue to work with other security services to rid the country of insurgents. Thus, we will not be distracted by such clearly organized attempts to tarnish the good and sweaty image of the Service. “
