In its crackdown on drug dealers, the Mumbai Criminal Branch’s Anti Narcotics Call (ANC) arrested a Nigerian citizen with a valuable contraband substance (N331.357.767.84)
Defendant Inusa Godwin aka John, 36, was arrested with over 2 kilograms of metaqualone, a recreational drug.
The defendant is a well-known street vendor and was previously arrested by the Azad Maidan and Ghatkopar ANC unit and another by the Sonegaon police in Nagpur for similar offenses, officials said Thursday.
According to officials, ANC officials from the Kandivali unit received a tip that a drug peddler would arrive on Aarey Road on the outskirts of Goregaon, as a result, they set a trap.
In the afternoon, a Nigerian citizen was seen hanging around suspiciously with a bag in his hand.
“He was arrested on suspicion and during his search methaqualone weighing more than 2,014 kilograms was recovered,” said Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC).
In the international market, the value of the smuggled substance exceeds 6 crore of rupees, added an official.
Following the kidnapping, Godwin was registered under the provisions of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and was brought before the court which returned him to police custody.
The drug is addictive in nature and initially used to treat sleep disorders and anxiety, later it was used as a recreational drug. Overdosing on metaqualone could result in coma or even death in some cases, officials said.
