Northern Government Criticizes Attack on #EndSARS Protesters, Seeks Investigation

On Thursday, October 22, an emergency meeting of the governors of the 19 northern states was held, at which they criticized the loss of life and property as a result of the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

Governors said #EndSARS protesters have a right to voice their opinions, expressing surprise at the attacks.

They called on the federal government to set up a judicial commission to investigate the destruction and killings during the #EndSARS protest.

The forum also called on the central government to explore the possibility of ending the strike by the university teachers’ union.

Plateau State Governor’s Chairman and helmsman Simon Lalong, who read out the statement, expressed sympathy for those killed during the protest.

The 15-point communiqué read in particular: “The Forum deplores the devilish influencers in the form of hooliganism, ethno-religious fanatics and even political looters who intend to bring the nation to its knees and insist on regime change.

“The Forum called on all Nigerians to confront these enemies of the nation by supporting the president, the federal government and democracy in general.

“The Forum calls on all citizens to refrain from unreasonable display of feelings, harassment and intimidation against other citizens living in their home state. The Forum notes that these are all antics of the country’s enemies who are furiously seeking regime change outside the polling stations. “

The governors added that they decided to intensify their strategic interactions between different levels of stakeholders in their states, calling for police reform.

“The Forum calls for comprehensive and serious police reforms. It will support and accelerate the various initiatives put forward by the federal government and give more momentum to the nineteen (19) states in the north.

“The Forum supports the Constitutional Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate all levels of destruction and killings during the Endsars protest.

“The federal government wants to explore the possibility of ending the ASUU strike. Most young people are inactive at home. ”
