now is not the time to tense your muscles, says Atik Bagud El Rufai

The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has asked Kaduna Governor Nasir El Rufai and the Nigeria Workers’ Congress (NLC) to stop flexing their muscles.

Unions have announced a warning strike to force the governor to reverse the recent massive layoffs of state employees.

The strike paralyzed economic activity in the state, as banks, hospitals, airports, train stations, among other things, were closed.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kebbie State Governor and PGF President Senator Atiku Bagudu also called on the NLC to show a greater commitment to engaging governments at all levels in solving problems.

The governors said the atmosphere in the country was already tense, adding that instead of flexing their muscles, the government of Kaduna State and NZK should return to the negotiating table.

“Recognizing the challenges that all of our states face, especially as incomes decline, we call on all patriotic Nigerians, including the NLC, to demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging governments at all levels in problem solving. Now is not the time to flex your muscles.

“Nigerians are already overwhelmed with many problems. At this critical juncture in our democratic journey, there can be no limits to commitments between all governments and all citizens.

“Therefore, it is necessary to take all steps to resolve the current confrontation between the government of Kaduna and NZK. We urge the state government and the NLC to return to the negotiating table.

“We call on the NLC leadership to recognize that the burden of leadership is to respond to challenges with an honest willingness to correct the mistakes of the past.

“As progressive governors, we share the vision of the Kaduna State government to reform all local government councils to make them more effective and therefore at the core of critical development initiatives.

“At the same time, we want to appeal to the state government, led by our colleague Malam Nasir El-Rufai, to take all necessary measures to ensure that all differences are resolved in the broadest interests of the citizens of Kaduna State. “, – he said.
