Police, Ikoyi prison attacked by army for attempting to escape from prison

Several Nigerian police officers and Nigerian soldiers stormed the Ikoyi prison.

According to The PUNCH, they arrived at the Ikoya Correctional Center to thwart a prison escape attempt.

A video posted by The PUNCH by an eyewitness shows smoke rising from parts of the center and prisoners fleeing.

It became known that the prison administration immediately informed the police and military authorities with a request for reinforcements.

The witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Now I see them from my balcony. Soldiers and militiamen arrived. I saw the prisoners throw stones and I saw the fire.

“Many of the prison staff gathered at the entrance to the prison, while some of the inmates left.”

Our correspondent also heard shots from prisons.

Lagos State Police Officer Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi said the cause of the fire could not yet be established, but the police had been sent to prisons.

“We do not know the cause of the fire, but we are on the ground. We mobilized on the spot. Details will be announced later, ”he said.
