President Bukhari: 51 civilians, 11 policemen, 7 soldiers killed in riots

The president announced the death toll during a virtual meeting with former leaders and security chiefs on Friday.

Bukhari allegedly said that 51 civilians, 11 policemen and seven soldiers were killed during the riots.

At a virtual rally on Friday, President Bukhari, 77, said his administration was promising to meet protesters’ demands. But he said his government would not fold its arms and allow the criminals who hijacked the protests to continue their “hooliganism.”

The president said at the meeting that 51 civilians, 11 police officers and seven soldiers were killed in the riots, his spokesman said. It was not immediately clear whether these figures include protesters allegedly killed by security forces in Lagos on Tuesday.

Earlier, the president gave a short telecast calling on protesters to end the demonstrations and instead engage with the government “in search of solutions.”

He faced criticism for not mentioning the shooting in Lagos.
