Protest at Lekki toll booth ruined by the army, not hijacked by thugs - JUDICIAL PANEL

The Lagos State Panel on Restitution for Victims of SARS-Related Abuses and Other Matters said the October 2020 #EndSARS protest at Lekki Tollgate was not hijacked by thugs as speculated in some corners, but ruined by soldiers.

According to the panel, the protest was “very peaceful every day, including October 20”.

“In an effort to justify the deployment of the army, his main witness before the panel, Brigadier General Taiwo, stated that once a protest has exceeded 2-3 days, it will be hijacked by thugs. The panel believes this claim was not substantiated. The EndSARS protest in Lekki Tollgate, in particular, was peaceful and orderly and was not hijacked by thugs, ”the report reads.

“The group notes that the chaos and violence recorded elsewhere in Lagos state did not happen at the Lekki motorway exit, so there was no need for any apprehension from the government or security agencies to try to dispel that. ‘peaceful assembly, with soldiers armed with lethal weapons ”.

“The deployment of the army to Lekki Tollgate on 20.10.2020, in the absence of reported violence, was totally unjustified”.

In a 309-page report presented Monday to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, the panel admitted that soldiers fired blanks and ammunition at armless protesters intending to kill and maim them.
