Kanu’s colleague and ally, Ms. Joe Okey-Odumakin, confirmed this Wednesday for The PUNCH.
“I can confirm that he is dead. This is really sad news. The statement will be published shortly, ”he said.
The cause of his death was not immediately confirmed.
Kanu, who was appointed to the Supreme Military Council led by the late head of state, General Murtala Mohammed in 1975, later became a human rights activist after leaving the army.
He joined the NADECO democracy movement and played a leading role in campaigning for the canceled presidential election on June 12, 1993.
