There are fears that more than 10 people died in Akungba Akoko, southwestern Akoko local government, Ondo state, on Saturday evening when a trailer driver lost control and crashed into a car. market.
The driver of the trailer, which was loaded with bags of rice, reportedly lost control and entered the Akungba Akoko market, killing more than 10 people and injuring many.
According to an eyewitness, the trailer was moving off the axis of Akungba city and heading towards Akure when the driver lost control and crashed into the popular Ibaka market in Akungba.
He said that the casualties with various injuries were taken to the hospital as rescuers are still struggling to remove some of the victims from the crash site.
“The incident happened around 7:30 pm when a trailer loaded with sacks of rice collided with market stalls.
“As I speak with you, about 10 people must have been killed because we removed the bodies and many are still trapped under the trailer.”
The public relations officer of the Ti-Leo Ikoro State Police Command, who confirmed the incident, said about eight people had been killed.
“As we speak now, it has been confirmed that eight people have died in the accident and we still have supplies as many people are still trapped under the trailer.”
State Highway Traffic Safety Sector Command has not yet confirmed the incident at the time of this report.
