Senate Minority Caucus Rejects Lauretta Onochi’s Appointment as INEC Commissioner

Senate Minority Leader Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe condemned the appointment by President Muhammadu Bukhari of his Media Assistant Lauretta Onochi as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abaribe, representing Abia South, called the appointment a violation of the Constitution.

He said the Senate minority faction was against the nomination and called on Bukhari to withdraw it.

“President Bukhari, by appointing Lauretta Onochi, voluntarily went against the constitution, which he swore to abide by.

“Clause 14 of Article F of the third list of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) prohibits a member of the charter of a political party from being a member of INEC.

“The minority group in the Senate opposes this candidacy and calls on the president to withdraw it,” Abaribe said in a short statement in Abuja.
