Seven SIM cards can be connected to one NIN – Pantami
Communications and Digital Economy Minister Dr. Isa Pantami said on Friday that seven SIM cards could be linked to a national identification number in the recently launched mobile application of the National Identity Management Commission.
The minister said the ministry and the NIMC are working to transform the NIN registration process and then connect to SIM cards as required by the Nigeria Communications Commission.
“We have developed an application, you will see it when you connect to the Internet. If you have a NIMC number, you can only download it without visiting the office. You can bind up to seven SIM numbers to one. I have already downloaded the application, launched it and immediately linked some of my numbers. This is part of the digitization, ”he said.
Antami performed while participating in the Politics Today TV program, which was controlled by PUNCH.
He also said that the ministry, NIMC and telecom operators would look into all NIN connectivity to SIM cards by network users if the federal government enacts a new lock during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
The federal government has said that telecom subscribers with NINs have a deadline for associating their NINs with their SIM cards by January 19, and for non-NIN subscribers by February 9.
As of October 2020, the total number of mobile network connections was 207.58 million, but currently only 43 million Nigerians have a NIN, so 164 million phone users are at risk of being disconnected.
