Soldiers used blank cartridges while filming Lekki – Sani Usman
Former army public relations director Brigadier General Sani Usman said on Thursday that soldiers who shot protesters outside the toll station in Lekki used “blank cartridges.”
Usman told Arise News that the blanks used to disperse the protesters had little or no effect on his target.
We will remind that earlier the army denied the presence of its officers at the shooting site.
But on Wednesday, the Nigerian Army’s 81st Division (NA) reported that the Lagos state government had called on the military to intervene during the SARS protests.
Speaking Thursday, Usman said, “If you look at the containers, they were empty cartridges, and empty cartridges don’t even kill. At close range, maybe 100 meters, maybe he will have some kind of pigmentation on his skin.
“Remember that the military is armed and by the nature of their training they are trained to kill, and I think that the military in their wisdom, instead of using real ammunition, chose to use virgin armor that is designed for training.
“I think they should be commended for there would have been serious collateral damage otherwise, but they were professional enough to do it.”
