Tensions over bandit attacks on customs officials in Ogun
Criminals working with smugglers in the Kikelomo area of Ietoro, Ogun State attacked, injured and severely beat some customs officials in the line of duty.
Deputy Controller Usman Yahaya made the revelation in a statement by Theophilus Dunia, head of communications for the NCS Federal Zone A task force, on Tuesday in Lagos.
At approximately 800 hours on December 22, 2020, the agents performing their statutory duty to enforce anti-smuggling laws acted on intelligence, Yahai said.
“They intercepted six Ford buses carrying imported steamed rice in the Kykelomo area of Ietoro, Ogun State.
“After the interception, several thugs armed with dangerous weapons and spells who worked in support of the smugglers quickly mobilized and attacked our officers to prevent the kidnapping.
“As a result of the attack, three customs officers were injured of varying degrees of severity, and in the ensuing pandemonium, one person was wounded by a bullet during resistance.
“The injured officers are currently being treated at our medical facility and further investigations have been launched to bring the attackers to justice,” he said.
He noted that he was very concerned about the loss of life and serious injuries inflicted on the officers, which could have been completely avoided if only the young people were patriotic enough to know that the officers were only fulfilling their legal duties.
