Tensions over the rise of police to power at a Yoruba self-determination rally in Ibadan

According to a PUNCH report, police took control of Mapo Hall, Ibadan, the site of a rally organized by Professor Bungee Akintoye Ilana Odua to raise awareness of Yoruba self-determination.

Akintoye, an 86-year-old professor emeritus of history, was supposed to lead the demonstration, but our reporter noted that the place is surrounded by armed and armored police.

There are more than 20 police cars in the Mapo area, including patrol cars.

The organizers were also not seen at the venue, although some participants would have arrived earlier and left because of the situation there.

However, a truck with Yoruba agitators was later seen mounted on a megaphone, heading towards Oritamerin from the direction of Ber.

Calls sent to some of the organizers were not answered. But it became clear that they were preparing a strategy for the next course of action.
