The Fulani shepherds give the condition to put an end to open pasture

The shepherds said they cannot suddenly abandon the centuries-old practice because there is still no alternative way to feed their cattle.

Conditions were given by Fulani herders before open grazing could be stopped in Nigeria.

Herders under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore said they were willing to stop open grazing if the government made funding and logistics available to create alternatives to open grazing.

The shepherds said they cannot suddenly abandon the centuries-old practice because there is still no alternative way to feed their cattle.

This was announced by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore brand ambassador, Temitope Ajayi, together with the association’s officials on a courtesy visit to the women’s affairs minister, Pauline Tallen, in Abuja on Thursday 11 November.

She said: “Women as mothers are known to be peacemakers. Women and children bear the brunt (effects) of the shepherd / farmer crisis and all forms of battles and wars, are the engine of national development and therefore hold the key to the development of livestock farming.

He added that it was necessary to reorient and change the mentality and perceptions of Fulani herders in order to put an end to the obsolete open grazing practices.
