The Hausa traders claim to have built a shashi market. They’re liars, the Ford Foundation, others built it for us – traditional leader
Baale Shasha village chief Amusa Ajani said on Friday that those who attribute the creation of the Shash market to the Hausa communities are liars who do not know the history of the market.
He said the market was created by the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation through the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The traditional leader, who spoke to the Sahara Reporter on Friday, explained that the market was created to compensate the women of Shashi.
He said: “More than 60 years ago, the federal government tried to obtain a specific piece of land for IITA with certain qualities. That’s where it got in Nigeria. So they came up to us to leave this place, but we said no because they kicked us out of Eleyele, and as a result we were transferred to the University of Ibadan.
“They also asked us to leave the University of Ibadan and we moved to this place and now they tell us to leave this place again, we will not. But now these white people have offered to live with us. They asked us to count the number of villages on our land, and we counted them; they were 33 years old.
“They paid the planners and they gave us this place on the condition that they would not come to our house to bother us. So we asked them what they would do with our wives, because at that time they were going to the Oja-Oba, Sango and Mokol markets, which were far from here, so the white people said they would build a market for us. …
“They brought blueprints for our homes and market. Not only the market, they built these houses for us. The market was built a year before we moved here. There was a woman, Monia’s first counselor, named Mrs. Bolarinwa; he paid his salaries during the year to connect the electricity to the market.
“Subsequently, there was a crisis involving pepper sellers in the Oja-Oba region of Ibadan. They were kicked out of Oja Oba due to the crisis and the current Seriki Shasha approached Ms. Bolarinwa to open up a market for her people. So the woman promised to take him to her own market, which was the Shash market.
“It was then that he took Seriki to the market and made sacrifices. Two rams were killed in the market that day. At that time I was not Baale, but I was a member of the committee. At that moment, we watched the elders making sacrifices. To attract more people to the market, Ms. Bolarinva subsidized milk prices for the population. He really tried to make sure the market was doing well. And our elders allowed the Hausa to start bringing onions to the market from the north. Every time we ask them to pay their royalties, House residents say we want to kick them out of the market.
“They continued to lie that they would pay us. We took this matter to the police headquarters, and then the commissioner took charge, but to this day we are still worried. He said they should have given us 10 baskets of onions and we paid for them the day after we were supposed to sell them. But when things went wrong, we reduced the number of baskets to two to make sure we had the money to run the market. So that’s the whole story. It was the Ford Foundation and Rockefeller who built 250 stores for us through IITA. “
