Two people were kidnapped as gunmen invaded Gidan-Kwano, the community that houses the main campus of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, in the state of Niger.
It was learned that gunmen invaded the community on motorcycles around 1:00 am on Thursday 11 November, firing warning shots into the air to scare the students.
Armed bandits also broke into shops right in front of the university gate and took away valuables.
The incident created panic among off-campus students as they ran to safety.
It was also noted that police and other security officers were quickly mobilized to the scene and involved the gunmen in a firefight, which resulted in two deaths among the invaders, while others fled with their victims.
State Police Commissioner Bala Kuyars on Monday, who confirmed the incident, said two of the gunmen were killed, adding that a team of security officers had been sent to the area.
The police chief asked the students and their faculty to stay calm and go about their normal activities, saying the Force is on top of the situation.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said that the situation is under control.“At around 11:30 pm, some suspected thugs attacked a shop in Gidan-Kwano in front of the FUT gate and kidnapped two children of the shop owner,“He has declared.“Police / vigilante were immediately enlisted on the spot for an aggressive manhunt of the thugs and during the arrest and search, one of the suspects was intercepted and arrested in the village of Barkuta”, He added.
