Harris County prosecutors said two men tricked a 63-year-old woman for $ 100,000 into believing they were Bruno Mars.
The woman interacted with men online via Instagram and Google Hangout, planning to speak to the 11-time Grammy Award winner.
Investigators said the woman “fell in love” with “Mars” and was tricked into thinking that he was leaving his concert tour to be with her.
Mars also asked the woman to deposit $ 100,000 in bank accounts to help the singer cover the cost of the tour, investigators said.
If convicted, the two men face two to ten years in state prison. The bond for Azuonwu was set at $ 30,000. There was no information about Amadi’s arrest.
Alleged fraudster Chinwendu Azuonwu, 39, a Nigerian citizen and permanent resident of Houston, was indicted Tuesday on charges of impersonating Mars on Instagram as part of a scam to defraud the victim of his savings.
Azuonwu, accused of third-degree money laundering, was arrested this week, KPRC-TV reported.
In court documents, 29-year-old Vasily Amadi was identified as his accomplice. Information about Amadi’s arrest was not available Wednesday morning.
The victim, a resident of North Richland Hills, Texas, told police that he created an Instagram profile “looking for a company” in 2018.
