While Putin is scaring the world with very low quality cartoons about hypersonic weapons with an unmeasured number of swings, the Americans already have in reality what the Kremlin ringleader threatened. This was stated by the Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Robert O.Brien. The United States will be prepared to deploy intermediate- and shorter-range hypersonic missiles in Europe if necessary to contain Russia.
This was stated by the Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Robert O Brien, speaking at the Washington Hudson Institute, according to American sources.
“We are building hypersonic weapons, we are building ballistic missile delivery systems that will help keep America safe … protect our allies and contain China. We will deploy such missiles, if necessary, in Europe to contain Russia, ”said the US presidential aide.
“We think that by deploying these weapons, we will not only contain the attack, but it will also put us in a position in which we can conduct real negotiations on arms control in the future,” said the US presidential aide.
“Just like in the 1980s, we deployed Pershing missiles and cruise missiles in Europe so that the Soviet Union sat down at the negotiating table and agreed to discuss the ‘zero option’ that preceded the INF Treaty,” O Brien explained.
According to him, Russia and the United States will extend the Treaty on Measures to Further Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Arms (START-3) for a year if they can resolve issues related to verification measures.
“We have proposed extending New START by a year,” said O Brien. And at the same time, both sides – Russia and the United States – agreed to set a limit on their weapons production during this year to see if it gives us time to negotiate a new, really great long-term arms control deal with the Russians.
“I think we are getting closer to this. We are working out a verification procedure for this one year period. If we can resolve the verification issues, then I believe we can come to a deal. We just need to see how seriously Russians take arms control, ”said O Brien.
